Artist's Description

Nancy Green (1834 - 1923)

The first Aunt Jemima, Nancy Green, was born a slave in 1834. She signed an exclusive contract which gave her the right to portray the character for the rest of her life. Green was featured at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Green, as Aunt Jemima, cooked pancakes, sang songs, and told stories of the Old South.*

I recently photographed a couple of cookie jars in an antique store in Tennessee. I never viewed Aunt Jemima as anything other than helping my mom cook the best pancakes a boy can remember. Hopefully, no one will be offended by these images. I only hope they bring back the good memories.

About Paul Mashburn

Paul Mashburn

I have always been intrigued with photography. I did sports, fashion, news, and wedding photography for a time, but even after I started a career where photography was no longer a part of the work, I kept firing away for personal reasons and to document my life. The photos came in handy for my personal blog http://mushysmoochings.blogspot.com. I still write there quite a bit, but documenting the theater restoration project keeps me pretty busy. I hope you enjoy my photos, because the process gives me great personal pleasure. Even if you don't buy, please leave a comment to keep driving me on!
