O'Neal Bridge opened in 1939 and was initially a toll bridge. The toll was 15 cents, habitual users paid 10 cents and trucks and buses were charged by the weight and cargo.
In 1940, a constitutional amendment was passed to remove the toll and float a new bond issue to pay of the bridge. At midnight on Dec. 18, 1950, the mayors of the Tri-cities and Gov. Frank Murray Dixon paid the last toll.
This photo looks from the Florence side toward Tuscumbia. There was once a railroad bridge all the way across, but now only a portion of bridge remains, and serves the public as a walkway out over the Tennessee. To the east one can see Wilson Dam.
I have always been intrigued with photography. I did sports, fashion, news, and wedding photography for a time, but even after I started a career where photography was no longer a part of the work, I kept firing away for personal reasons and to document my life. The photos came in handy for my personal blog http://mushysmoochings.blogspot.com. I still write there quite a bit, but documenting the theater restoration project keeps me pretty busy. I hope you enjoy my photos, because the process gives me great personal pleasure. Even if you don't buy, please leave a comment to keep driving me on!
