Description
This lovely old church is on the Cades Cove Loop.
In the late 1830’s there was a debate in the Baptist Church over whether or not to support missions. As a result the Cades Cove Baptist Church split. Missionary supportive followers along with Pastor Johnson Adams left the church and formed the Missionary Baptist Church in 1841. Wanting to distinguish from the missionary supportive followers, those left at Cades Cove Baptist Church changed its name to Primitive Baptist Church.
On May 15, 1841 the missionary supportive Baptists founded their new church but had no church building. Often they met in their own family homes, while sometimes borrowing the buildings of Primitive and Methodist Churches. In 1894 they finally built a church building near Hyatt Hill. However, they soon outgrew their first facility and had to relocate to a new building in 1915; which is the building still standing today.
