Description
Black Mountain is a high-elevation site that serves as midpoint of the linear Cumberland Trail State Park. A hard-surfaced parking area and 700’ of hard surfaced, ADA-accessible trail connect hikers to the Cumberland Trail. Ecologically, Black Mountain is well-known for several rare native plants found there. It is also known for its disjunct, southernmost populations of northern species such as Showy Lady’s Slipper orchid and Yellow Birch.
This outcrop is on the Cumberland Trail, a segment of the Justin P. Wilson Cumberland Trail State Park is a state owned hiking trail following a line of ridges and gorges along the eastern escarpment of the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee. The trail begins at Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and ends at Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park and Prentice Cooper Wildlife Management Area just outside Chattanooga, Tennessee. The trail travels through 11 Tennessee counties.
